Type A Deodorant — An Aluminum Free Deodorant to Stop the Funky Party in Your Pits

Did you know that sweat from our armpits, the apocrine sweat gland, is odorless and contains proteins, lipids, and steroids? According to this study, "apocrine sweat glands respond to emotional stimuli such as anxiety, pain, or sexual arousal." The report further states that body odor is created when bacteria on the skin and hair follicles feed on the fats and protein. I just thought you should know that your armpits are a buffet for unseen organisms. Your anxiety, pain, and roll in the hay cause microscopic organisms to live their best life, making you funky in the process.

Knowing that there is a food fight in my pits that causes odor is enough to make me want to — actually, it makes me sweat. While I don't think body odor is something anyone would associate with me, I've had my moments in private where I had to give myself the side-eye when I've had a long day at home while deodorant free. Fall is the perfect time to ease into a new deodorant without offending the public or myself. As someone who sweats and sweats a lot, I need something that will keep me deodorized when I venture out.

A few years ago, I declared Fall my natural deodorant season. You might be wondering why I don't use a natural or aluminum-free deodorant all the time. The answer is threefold; my pits are very sensitive, I sweat a lot, and I'm allergic to some more popular natural deodorant options. So while I have tried many, yes, even the one you probably just thought about, I haven't found one that makes it beyond cuffing season. I'm happy to report that Type A is a strong contender.

Why I like Type A Deodorant:

  1. It doesn't irritate my armpits. This is the number one reason I ditch deodorants, both the more natural and traditional versions with the aluminum (antiperspirants.) I have a girlfriend that swears by a particular brand, and I went and got it. Within three days, I had a rash in my pits.

  2. It leaves my pits feeling moisturized but not greasy. I once used a coconut oil-based deodorant that had me feeling like a slip and slide was in my armpits. I would like to meet the person who thought that was fun.

  3. It absorbs almost instantly and doesn't leave white residue on my clothing. This is key, especially when I'm about to wear the same black turtleneck for 7 outings in a row. #judgenotletsyebejudged

  4. It comes in an easy to use tube that I squeeze, and it applies like I would any other traditional deodorant. I once used a crystal that I had to wet before applying. There was also that one I had to apply with my fingers. Yikes!

  5. I love that Type A has sweat-activated technology. This means it has me covered when I need it the most. It's mostly the anxiety and pain activated sweat for me. :)

It's important to note that Type A is not an antiperspirant. It's not going to stop you from sweating. Through the use of sweat-activated technology, it absorbs the sweat and keeps you from getting funky.

The first thing I do before trying any new product is to look at the ingredient list. I know I cannot do a base (first or second ingredient) of baking soda, propylene glycol, or coconut oil for deodorants. I was happy to see that Type A didn't have those ingredients as a base. It does contain baking soda, but a little further down on the label. While it does contain a mix of essential oils, it's oils I can tolerate. My favorite scent is The Achiever, probably because I'm not -- if you ask my mom. It is a minty blend of oils that's pretty present when first applied but fades throughout the day.

Often times with natural deodorants, there is a detox period. I definitely experienced a detox when I made the switch to Type A. It lasted about 10 days. The key is to stick with it until your body kicks its aluminum habit. This is why, for me, Fall is the perfect time to try a natural deodorant. It's warm enough to test the natural deodorant's odor-blocking capabilities, but cool enough so you can ease into it and give your body time to adjust.
