At-Home Peels and Exfoliants to Try Right Now
The air in the Northeast is crisp, and leaves have started to change. For some, that signals pumpkin spice lattes, ankle booties, and chunky cardigans. For us, it's all those things AND skin peeling season.
Like the trees getting ready to shed their leaves, so must you shed those dead layers of skin before winter hits, and your glow goes the way of the temperature — all the way down. Skin that is exfoliated has a natural luminosity, with tight pores and even texture. If you take your exfoliation to a deeper level and get a peel, a baby's bum will have nothing on your fresh new skin.
Here are some of the at-home peels and exfoliants we’re loving right now.
Olay Masks Resurfacing Peel
Olay Masks Resurfacing Peel with AHA + Vitamin C is a 2 step peel containing Lactic Acid and Vitamin C. I've included it for those who still love the tactile sensation from gritty exfoliants. Step One uses baking soda in a water-free base as a polish that buffs the skin. It feels warm once applied. Step 2, The Activator, contains water, Lactic acid, and other ingredients that create a warm bubbly sensation on the skin when layered over step one. This is possibly the gentlest peel on the list -- it just makes it feel like you're doing a lot.
Tuel Power Peel Refining Glycolic Acid Gel
More of a slow-and-steady route to peeling, Tuel Power Peel Refining Glycolic Acid Gel is a nighttime serum that can be applied up to 3 times weekly. The Glycolic Acid-based nighttime treatment is formulated to dissolve dead skin and break down build-up to reveal brighter, clearer, more radiant skin. With continued use, the skin's texture is softened and smoothed to perfection.
Ren Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask
This Clean at Sephora favorite is a blend of Glycolic, Lactic, Citric, and Tartaric Acid. It works gently over time to exfoliate the skin and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This is a fantastic place to start if you are new to exfoliants, and you want to start inching your way to a peel.
Urban Skin RX Even Tone Resurfacing Peel Pads
The name is slightly deceptive because these pads don't actually do a physical peeling of the skin. You may experience a little flakiness, but visible layers of skin will not peel. The magic of this little pad-in-a-pouch is its ability to refine and resurface the skin's texture in a single-use. Super-charged with lactic acid, retinol, and arbutin, Urban Skin RX Peel Pads is a good option if you're new to "peel" products and want to see if it's worth all the hype (Spoiler Alert: It is!)
THE ORDINARY AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution
THE ORDINARY AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution is a 10-Minute peel that combines both AHAs and BHA. This product's pH is between 3.5 and 3.7, making it less aggressive than the 30% AHA content might suggest, but potential more irritating. The Glycolic Acid works on the surface layers to loosen dead skin cells while the BHA goes a little deeper to refine pores and boost radiance. It can be used 1-2 times per week.
Estee Lauder Perfectionist Pro Instant Resurfacing Peel
Estee Lauder Perfectionist Pro Instant Resurfacing Peel combines 9.9% AHAs and BHA. It is formulated to be gentle enough for first-time peelers. It's lightweight, applies easily, and didn’t sting when applied. As you build up a tolerance to exfoliants and peels, you may find that something that once gave a little sting, doesn’t after a few uses. This can be used up to twice weekly.
Exuviance Performance Peel AP25
If you are looking for an at-home version of a Derm-strength chemical peel, this is the closest product I've found. The two-step peel pad contains a 25% blend of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA), including Glycolic Acid, Mandelic Acid, and Gluconolactone. This is the most potent peel on the list --when using this peel pad system, your skin will peel, especially if you use twice a week. Exuviance Performance Peel AP25 truly delivers when used as recommended (or when used more frequently to encourage an even deeper chemical exfoliation).
MS Skincare Enlighten
MS Skincare Enlighten is a re-texturizing treatment that combines the most famous AHA, glycolic acid, and powerful antioxidants like red seaweed. It also contains Glucomannan, an ingredient believed to help keep the skin's microbiome in balance. From my experience, there is no stinging with this peel, but my skin always looks smooth, refined, and radiant when I rinse.
Very Pretty Skin Glycolic Resurfacing Milk
This cleanser leads a double life as a mask and overnight skin refining treatment. Use after removing makeup and drying skin. Massage a generous a quarter size amount into dry skin for up to 10 minutes before rinsing. See full review and usage tips here.
Please, PLEASE, follow packaging directions for all products listed. Once you are familiar with how the product works and how your skin reacts, you can experiment with off label usage. We preach daily sunscreen use, but it is even more imperative when using these products. Peeling and exfoliating make the skin more sensitive to the sun.
After your exfoliant or your peel, follow with lightweight hydrating products such as the First Care Serum from Sulwhasoo or the Eve Milan Lacial Mask, both in the Face Flawless Skin Box (Now available with AfterPay). Top with your favorite moisturizer or face oil.
